How hard are they to keep? Betta fish are relatively easy to keep and are a popular choice for beginner fishkeepers.
What is its maximum size? Male bettas can reach a size of about 3 inches (7.6 cm), while females are slightly smaller.
Where are they from? Betta fish are native to the shallow waters of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
How many can I keep? It is recommended to keep bettas singly, as they are highly territorial and can become aggressive towards other bettas, especially males.
How compatible are they with other fish? Betta fish are generally not compatible with other fish, especially those with long, flowing fins that may trigger their territorial instincts. However, they can coexist peacefully with certain species of fish, such as small, non-aggressive tankmates like snails or shrimp.
What are the ideal water conditions? Betta fish require clean water with a temperature range of 78-80°F (25-27°C) and a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. They are also labyrinth fish, which means they have a specialized organ that allows them to breathe oxygen from the air as well as from the water, so it’s important to provide them access to the water’s surface. How do you tell the difference between Male and female? Male bettas are known for their vibrant colours and long, flowing fins, while females have shorter fins and are typically less vibrant in colour. Males also have a distinctive, larger anal fin called a “gonopodium” that females lack.
Fun Fact: Betta fish have the ability to build bubble nests. Males create these nests using bubbles and saliva at the water’s surface, where they care for their eggs until they hatch.
